Mickey Thompson Million Dollar Drag Race 2017 Preview
Million Dollar Race returns for 22nd season; announces partnership with Mickey Thompson tires
BRADENTON, Fla. – Randy Folk and daughter Jennifer, promoters of the Million Dollar Drag Race, have announced the addition of Mickey Thompson Wheels and Tires as a title rights sponsor for the prestigious event, which will return to Montgomery Motorsports Park in Montgomery, Ala., on Oct. 19-22, 2017.
“We’re extremely pleased to have Mickey Thompson expand their involvement in the Million Dollar race,” said Folk. “They have been a great partner for a number of years and they have helped us grow this event into the richest and most prestigious bracket race in the world. I also want to thank Michael Tedesco and CARS Protection Plus for all their support over the years. They have also been a great partner, and they deserve a lot of credit for our success as well.”
Now in its 22nd year, the Mickey Thompson Million Dollar Drag Race remains the gold standard for E.T. bracket racers. Featuring the largest single-day payout in drag racing, the Mickey Thompson Million is once again expected to host more than 600 of the sport’s best racers for the action-packed four-day race which will once again include the Triple 25’s and the Million Dollar Main Event. Last year, Jeff Verdi of Glen Allen, Va., pocketed the $300,000 top prize for winning the main event when he defeated Tesz Powell of Morganton, N.C. in the final round.
This year, event promoter’s Randy & Jennifer have once again upped the ante with the addition of a new race format for the popular “Race to The Million” 64 car shootout program that will allow competitors to enter the main event in a more cost-effective manner. Anyone can enter the shooutout for $100 and will be given one dialed-in qualifying run, from the one qualifying run the best 64 packages get to race. This race will award four Million Dollar main event entries to the top four finishers, including a full weekend entry to the winner and round money starting with first round winners.
The marquee event is proud to announce they will also enjoy additional support from VP Race Fuels who will be on site all weekend for everyone’s racing fuel needs. In addition to selling fuel, VP will be giving back to the racers as well with fuel giveaways throughout the weekend.
Among the popular features that will return again in 2017 is the golf cart giveaway which is chosen by a random drawing of all competitors registered in the Triple 25’s and/or the Million Dollar Main Event. We will once again host the Lucas Oil Racer Appreciation party on Saturday night with a steak dinner for all competitors, live dj, and photo booth. Following the final round of the Million will be a fireworks show and champagne winner’s circle celebration. As always, the Mickey Thompson Million Dollar race has an open gate policy so spectators and crew can come enjoy the action on all four days for free.
There will be best losing packages in all races and more than $55,000 in prizes will be rewarded throughout the weekend. The popular Motor Mania TV will provide live streaming of the event to a worldwide audience. The VIP club will also return in 2017, visit www.themilliononline.com for more info and where you can join in August.
In order to maintain the integrity of the sport’s premiere bracket racing event, electronics expert Cody Harger will once again be utilized to perform spot technical inspections throughout the entire weekend. This will also include all quarter final or better finishers for a thorough inspection.
“Every year, we take time to evaluate the Million and we think about what we’ve done right and the things we can improve upon,” said Folk. “We always try to look at the race from the viewpoint of our competitors and we try to give them the best experience possible. This is the original Million Dollar Race and we enjoy a tremendous amount of support and I can’t say thank you enough to the racers who make it possible.”
Gates will open for parking on Tuesday, October 17, at noon, and will remain open all night. Wednesday will feature a free test and tune from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. immediately afterwards, the “Race to The Million” 64 car shootout will take place.
Thursday morning, October 19, will start the weekend off with the first of (3) Triple 25’s. All the Triple 25 events, as well as the Million will feature best losing packages in rounds 1-6. Round money starts with third round winners and all payouts are 100-percent guaranteed.
